Lost River Cave Wetlands Storm Water Treatment System:

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is widening US 31W South in Bowling Green to five lanes. A new storm sewer system from the roadway will be discharging onto property owned by The Friends of Lost River Cave and Valley. Due to the sensitive ecosystem of the Lost River Cave, the City of Bowling partnered with Lost River Cave and Valley to construct a wetlands treatment system to remove pollutants from the storm water before it reaches Lost River and the Cave.

DDS ENGINEERING, PLLC, in a joint venture with Environmental Consulting Services, Inc., (ECSI), was selected by the City of Bowling Green to design a wetland system to treat the storm water runoff and determine the potential removal efficiency. DDS ENGINEERING, PLLC prepared the wetland planting plans and because the wetlands is to be located near the current Visitors Center, DDS ENGINEERING, PLLC also designed some atheistic features such as a waterfall and pedestrian access for viewing the wetland. DDS ENGINEERING, PLLC was also responsible for designing a pumping system to be located in Trooper Cave that would provide water to the wetlands during periods of drought or minimal rainfall.

DDS ENGINEERING, PLLC coordinated our design with The Friends of Lost River Cave and Valley, the Kentucky Department of Highways, Scotty’s Contracting, the City of Bowling Green Public Works Department, and other consultants to determine the best layout for the wetland treatment system. The design and function had to remove the pollutants from the waste stream, but we could not impact the visitors to the cave and visitors center. Working with all interested parties, we were able to design the wetland to everyone’s satisfaction.

We anticipate the construction contract to be awarded in December 2008.
